The Killer Clowns are a social phenomenon that consisted of the appearance of multiple people dressed up as clowns, described as scary, disturbing or terrifying.

Origins[]

In the United States, there is an urban legend baptized as phantom clowns (ghost clowns) which circulated in the mid-1980s, which led to a series of macabre clown appearances.

The first case would have taken place on 6 May 1981 when Brookline Police in Massachusetts launched an investigation into a pickup truck full of clowns after they tried to lure children into their vehicle.

Police searched in vain for suspects. Clown appearances were reported in the spring of 1981 in six cities in the United States.

According to folklorist Jan Brunvand, legends announcing clown appearances resumed in 1985 and continued until 1991, a decade after the first case.
